Veehandelaar Will Andersen zit met de handen in het haar wanneer zijn drijvers hem plots in de steek laten. Een financiële strop is een feit als Will zijn vee niet voor de winter naar de markt kan brengen. Noodgedwongen doet hij een beroep op een groepje schooljongens om zijn kuddes te begeleiden op de verre en gevaarlijke tocht. De knapen missen uiteraard de nodige ervaring, maar Will heeft enkel de tijd om hen de basisknepen aan te leren. Gelukkig kan hij op de hulp rekenen van de zwarte cowboy Nightlinger. Naast alle natuurlijke obstakels die de groep onderweg moet overwinnen, volgt tot overmaat van ramp een groep gevaarlijke veedieven hen op de voet.
